Are you embarrassed by your broad beans?
- Do you find it hard to be different or to stand out from the crowd?
- Perhaps you assume that if you are ‘different’ then it must be you that’s ‘wrong’
- Do you struggle to make a decision because you can feel torn between your head (the sensible, expected choice) and your heart (the intuitive, off the beaten track option)?
- Is it difficult to stand behind your convictions and put your money where your mouth is?
If this is you, I see you.
This ‘quirky’ title is taken from my own childhood experience from when I was maybe 6 or 7!
One afternoon at school we were all given broad bean seeds to grow in jam jars. I diligently followed the instructions we were given, labelled my jam jar, they were all taken away to germinate and, as kids do, I forgot all about it – until, a couple of weeks later the jam jars reappeared.
In amongst a sea of jam jars with little to no activity, there was one jam jar which appeared to be full of some horrendous looking worms!
With a familiar feeling of crippling anxiety I knew those ‘worms’ were mine.
No-one else had any ‘worms’. I had done something very wrong.
Desperately trying and failing to find a way of switching the labels on the jars I had to own my worms.
Of course, these ‘worms’ were the strong and healthy roots that my broad bean seeds had sprouted. They were exactly how they should be. It was a success, but, all I felt was shame and embarrassment.
I get it!
When you are caught in this space you can really feel that you need to keep yourself small. You can feel reluctant to pop your head above the parapet or take a chance.
This is something we can work on together.
We can think about:
- Taking up space
- Owning the situation that you find yourself in
- Embracing difference
- Nurturing your creativity
- Freeing yourself from shame you have been holding onto
